Saturday, September 11, 2010, THE BIG EVENT is a youth-run and lead service event that gives Alexandria youth the chance to give "one big thanks" to their community. On the day of The Big Event, approximately 200 youth volunteers will complete 3 hour service projects at various Alexandria non profits -- totally more than 600 hours of service in one day! We are encouraging our youth volunteers to participate in this event in the spirit of The United We Serve campaign and 9/11's designation as a National Day of Service. This year's BIG EVENT is sponsored by BB&T, Alexandria City Public Schools and DASH bus. Numerous other donors will be thanked by name as well and will be on all the t-shirts and banners associated with this event.

8 am: Youth Gather at Site, have breakfast and hear remarks from Key Note Speaker: Herman Boone, former TC Football Coach of Remember the Titans fame

9:00 am Youth leave for service sites around city

9:30 - 12:30 pm Service Projects

1:00-2:00 Lunch and DJ back on Mount Vernon Avenue

Thursday, September 16, 2010, The Northern Virginia Association for Volunteer Administration (NVAVA), presents a Volunteer Management Workshop, "The Benefits & Challenges of Engaging New Volunteers." Networking/Light Breakfast: 9:30-9:50a.m., Announcements: 9:50-10:00a.m., NVAVA Program: 10:00a.m.-12 noon. Saturday, September 25, 2010, Emergency Volunteer Mobilization Exercise - Volunteer Alexandria together with Red Cross of Alexandria is currently recruiting volunteers for its upcoming Mock Volunteer Reception Center Exercise from 8 am-12 pm. The majority of "actors" to play the role of SUV's (spontaneous unaffiliated volunteers) are requested to stop by for "processing" between 9:00am-11:00pm.
