The Alternative Community Service (ACS) Program is a volunteer placement program for individuals required by the courts to perform community service. Volunteer Alexandria’s goals for the ACS Program are twofold: To make available to community nonprofit organizations and public agencies an additional, valuable volunteer resource. To place court-referred clients in suitable community service settings for successful completion of required hours, thereby involving offenders in constructive community activity. Clients are referred to Volunteer Alexandria from any number of sources. They must meet with the Program Manager for an interview before they are placed with an organization. The interview determines their skills, interests and availability, as well as the appropriateness of placing them with any given agency. Volunteers are to contact their site supervisor within 7 days after they have been given the contact information. A schedule will be discussed and decided on at this first meeting. In this regard, volunteer positions should be treated like any other job. Once a schedule has been established, volunteers are expected to participate once a week. Not doing so would lead to a discontinuation of the agreement.
Once the volunteer hours are met, the site supervisor will fax the original timesheet to the Volunteer Alexandria. When received, the ACS Manager will call the site supervisor to verify the hours and will then write a completion letter to be faxed to any lawyers and probation officers listed on the intake form. The completion letter will be mailed to the courts. For this process to be completed, the volunteers must have finished their commitment no later than 5 business days before their court date.
VolunteerAlexandria would like to thank the Alexandria Bar Association for their support.
